Pat Cummins will make his return in the first Test against South Africa, after missing the second match against the West Indies due to a quad injury.

The skipper was unable to overcome the minor issue in time for the day-night Test at Adelaide, but will be back on deck for The Gabba clash with the Proteas.

The return of Cummins will see hometown boy Michael Neser dropped from the side, with fan favourite Scott Boland retaining his spot.

Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out due to a side strain and is unlikely to feature in the three-game series.

The match will be the first time the two sides have met in Test cricket since the infamous 2018 series, which saw David Warner and Steve Smith suspended for their involvement in the ball-tampering scandal.

South Africa are yet to announce their XI for the first match, but the likes of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje are expected to be named on what promises to be a pace-friendly pitch in Brisbane.

"A couple of the boys said it's similar to what they've seen here in the past," Cummins said.

"It looks like there's a bit of grass...we'll see how it looks tomorrow.

"They'll give it a final cut. It always looks pretty green here a couple of days out, then on the morning of day one it looks a bit different.

"The last couple of years it's played a bit different to how it has in the past. It's a funny one The Gabba – even if it has got grass on it, you do really need to bowl well.

"It's got a bit of bounce normally here. You can get carried away with the seam but you still need to hit the stumps."
