Steve Smith will return to the Big Bash this season, signing on as a replacement player for the Sydney Sixers.

The 33-year-old hasn't played in the competition for the past two seasons, having last pulled on the magenta strip in BBL|09 for the Sixers' title-winning campaign.

Smith will link up with the Sixers for the back-half of the season, replacing one of the side's international recruits after Australia's upcoming Test series against South Africa.

The right-hander could face off against David Warner on January 21st, with the two Sydney sides set to do battle at the SCG.

Sixers captain Moises Henriques paid tribute to Smith and his importance to the franchise.

“Steve Smith is a Sixer," he said.

"He has been part of this club from the start, and he will be part of this club for as long as he wants to be.

“He has always known that the door is open to him playing with us again and we are really excited that our fans will get to see him in four matches in the latter half of the season, including two at the SCG.

“He’s focused on the Test summer right now but once that is over, we will welcome him back with open arms.”

Smith will join a star-studded side for the Sydney club, who will be looking to level the Scorchers and win their fourth BBL title.

The competition begins on Tuesday night with a clash between the Thunder and Stars.
