The Raiders are strictly against setting Josh Jacobs loose into the open market just yet.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Friday the Raiders are expected to use the franchise tag on the running back if a long-term deal is not finalized by the Tuesday deadline.

The move, which has been widely expected, would buy some time to potentially extend the 25-year-old down the line.

Josh Jacobs franchise tag value

The franchise tag for running backs next season will cost $10.091 million. If the tag is utilized, both sides will have until mid-July to agree on a long-term deal. Otherwise, Jacobs will play on a one-year contract in 2023.

Either way, the Raiders seem committed to keeping Jacobs around.

"The hope and the goal is that he's here for a while," coach Josh McDaniels told reporters at the NFL Combine this week, per ESPN

Josh Jacobs contract

Jacobs' rookie contract, which expired after the 2022 season, was a four-year deal for $11.93 million and he received a $6.69 million signing bonus. The Raiders decided last spring not to pick up his fifth-year option.

He is the first running back expected to be tagged ahead of Tuesday's deadline. Other candidates for the tag are Cowboys' Tony Pollard and Giants' Saquon Barkley.
