Cristiano Ronaldo might not play his club football in Europe's top tiers or the UEFA Champions League anymore, but he continues to break records for Portugal.

Ronaldo is men's football's leading international goalscorer and the top appearance-maker for his country, having been playing for Portugal for 20 years, earning 201 caps and scoring a phenomenal 123 goals.

The 38-year-old is now trying to help his nation qualify for Euro 2024, having captained them to victory at Euro 2016 but fallen short in all the other major tournaments in which he's participated.

He played the full game against Slovakia last time out, although it was former United teammate Bruno Fernandes who scored the only goal of the game to secure the win.

The Sporting News explains Ronaldo's situation for Portugal and whether he will be available for selection against Luxembourg tonight (Monday).

Is Cristiano Ronaldo playing today vs. Luxembourg?

The simple and short answer is no. Ronaldo is serving a one-game suspension after picking up his third yellow card of the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.

He was booked in Portugal’s 1-0 win over Slovakia on Friday after a heavy challenge on his former Manchester United teammate, the Slovakian goalkeeper Martin Dubvravka.

Although he's a pivotal player, Ronaldo's absence shouldn't hit Roberto Martinez's side too hard, given they're at home against a team they will be expected to beat. Portugal have a perfect record in Euro 2024 qualifying Group J, winning five games out of five, and can cement their spot atop the group with victory over surprise-package Luxembourg. That should help them ease to qualification.

Tonight's visitors have 10 points from five games and will be looking to cause another upset in the group, having shocked Iceland and Bosnia and Herzegovina so far. Portugal won the reverse fixture away from home 6-0 in March this year, with Ronaldo bagging a brace.
