Having held belts at featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight, two-time Olympic gold medallist Lomachenko was dethroned by Teofimo Lopez in 2020.

Lopez then dropped the unified titles to Kambosos in late 2021.

In his first attempted defence, Kambosos was defeated by Devin Haney in Melbourne, before the American repeated the result in the rematch to retain the undisputed title.

Haney then put those belts on the line against Lomachenko and came away with a close unanimous decision victory.

George Kambosos' past fights

Kambosos was awarded a controversial victory over Maxi Hughes in March 2023. Kambosos scored 117-111 and 115-113 on two of the scorecards, with the third judge calling the fight even at 114-114.

Hughes initially considered an appeal to the IBF but Kambosos shut down any discussion of a robbery

Kambosos' previous fights were both against Devin Haney; the first was for undisputed status in the lightweight division, and the second was a contractual rematch, both of which Kambosos lost via UD.

Before this, Kambosos shocked the world in 2021, taking out Teofimo Lopez in New York and winning the IBF, WBA, and WBO lightweight titles.
