Despite being one of the longest-played and most-watched sports on the planet, golf is fairly new to the modern Olympics scene, and the 2024 Paris Games are only the fifth at which the world's best golfers, both male and female will be going for the gold medal in a competition featuring 60 nations.

Two early editions of the Summer Olympics, in 1900 and 1904, hosted a tournament, before a 112-year hiatus saw golf chalked off the Olympic calendar until its long-awaited return in 2016. This time around, golf returns to the city in which it first debuted at the Olympics 124 years ago – France's capital, Paris.

Women's golf in particular holds historic value, with the first edition at the 1900 Games in France seeing women compete in the Olympic Games for the very first time at any sport.

Margaret Abbott became the first woman to ever win Olympic gold, though given the women's edition of the tournament, was played back across the pond at the Chicago Golf Club, the history-maker was instead presented with a gilded porcelain bowl as a medal and was never informed she'd played in an official Olympics-sanctioned event before her death in 1955.

124 years after Abbot's historic triumph, world number one Nelly Korda will be hoping to lead the US to back-to-back gold Medals, having won the individual prize at the delayed Tokyo Games in 2021. She's joined on the American team by Lilia Vu and Rose Zhang, with the US the clear favourites ahead of the first tee at Le Golf National

The Sporting News has everything you need to know about the women's golf tournament at the 2024 Olympic Games, including TV and streaming options for each day of the competition.
