The BYU Cougars will have to make up some ground in 2024 after ending their 2023 campaign on a five-game losing streak, missing out on postseason play for the first time since 2017.
The team is in its second year in the Big 12 Conference under coach Kalani Sitake.
The Cougars' offense struggled in the latter half of last season, even when junior transfer Jake Retzlaff took over the final four games. Baylor and USF transfer quarterback Gerry Bohanon will lead the charge and add his run ability to the Cougar attack.
BYU's top five receivers are also returning this season, including Chase Roberts who caught 42 passes in 2023.
The defense is in its second year under Jay Hill from FCS Weber State, and other Big 12 competition took advantage of the team's inexperienced defensive line and linebackers. Hill brought in a few former Weber State stars to add depth and size for a defense that ranked last in the country in generated sacks.
If the Cougars stay healthy and get production from their returning core, they'll have a chance of improving from last season. They'll have some tough matchups at home against Kansas State, Arizona, and Oklahoma State. They'll need to hold serve on their own field to stay afloat in the Big 12.
