Michigan State opens a doubleheader of Big Ten Conference football Friday against Florida Atlantic as its season-opener marks the beginning of the Jonathan Smith era in East Lansing, Mich.

The Spartans are attempting to re-establish an identity that made them one of the Big Ten's best teams over the last several years. Mark Dantonio served as coach for over a decade-plus, followed by a brief stint under Mel Tucker.

Despite a bowl victory against Pittsburgh to close out the 2020-2021 season, Tucker was fired unceremoniously last season as a Title IX investigation found that he was having inappropriate contact with a woman who was described as an activist. Tucker was accused of sexual harassment against the same woman, Brenda Tracy, based on an April 2022 phone conversation revealed in the investigation.

The Spartans finished last season 4-8, with a 2-7 mark in Big Ten play. Decimated by injuries, inconsistent quarterback play, and a failure to close out one-score games, they fumbled their way through the season.

Meanwhile, Florida Atlantic also finished 4-8 despite playing a tough nonconference schedule and nearly upsetting Illinois on the road. Given that it's Week 1, both teams' jitters may be on full display. Smith is being tasked with leading the Spartans back to relevance again.
