The NFL preseason is underway, with just a few weeks away from the start of the 2024 season. However, there already is injury news impacting teams across the league.

In Detroit, the latest ailment comes to the team's star running back.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, RB Jahmyr Gibbs suffered a hamstring injury at practice on Monday. It's unclear how long the injury is expected to keep him out of action.

Gibbs enjoyed a stellar rookie campaign in 2023. A Pro Bowl selection, he rushed for 945 yards and 10 touchdowns, in addition to 316 receiving yards and a score. He received votes for the Offensive Rookie of the Year honor and was a major factor in Detroit's appearance in the NFC Championship game.

"I think we’re gonna be fine here," Campbell said in regards to Gibbs. "So, I think we’ll be good."

This is not the first time the running back out of Alabama has dealt with hamstring issues. He dealt with a similar injury last season that forced him to miss two games in October. He also missed workouts in the spring because of an unspecified soft-tissue injury. That injury was suffered on June 5 and the RB did not return to action until the start of OTAs on July 27.

In addition to Gibbs, rookie cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. were injured during the practice session.

Gibbs is in line to split duties out of the backfield once again this season with David Montgomery. The elder running back saw a higher number of snaps last season (219 to 182), however, the younger talent averaged slightly more yards per carry (5.2 to 4.6). Gibbs also was a much bigger factor in the passing game, bringing in 52 receptions to Montgomery's 16.

Detroit dropped its Week 1 preseason contest 14-3 against the Giants. Gibbs did not make an appearance in the contest.

The Lions are scheduled to face the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs in the second week of the preseason. That game is set for Saturday, Aug. 17.

Lions RB depth chart

Gibbs may be listed as the second running back on the depth chart, but he is more of a 1B to Montgomery's 1A. The pair are expected to headline the two-headed monster out of the backfield in Detroit.
