Patrick Surtain II is one of the best defensive backs in the league. Now, he is getting paid like one.

The Broncos and their star cornerback reportedly have agreed to a massive four-year extension worth $96 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The new deal makes Surtain II the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history, surpassing the honor previously held by Buccaneers star safety Antoine Winfield Jr.

Surtain II is coming off his second Pro Bowl season in Denver. The 24-year-old first-round pick out of Alabama had one interception, 12 pass deflections and 69 tackles during the 2023 season, his third in the NFL.

Here are more details on Surtain II's extension with the Broncos.

The Broncos previously had picked up the fifth-year option for Surtain II for the 2025 season, which would have made him an unrestricted free agent in 2026. However, with this new deal put in place, it keeps Surtain II locked in as a member of the Broncos' secondary for the future.

The extension with Denver and its star cornerback breaks the previous record deal for a defensive back done earlier this offseason in Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers and Winfield Jr. agreed to a four-year, $84.1 million deal that made him the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history.

That title lasted just three months before Surtain II's new agreement with the Broncos.

Surtain II is set to make $6.7 million for the 2024 season. It is the fourth year of his rookie deal he signed in 2021 after he was selected with the No. 9 overall pick by Denver in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Highest-paid DBs in NFL history

Surtain II now sits a top the list of highest-paid defensive backs in NFL history.

Winfield Jr. slides to No. 2 after setting the mark earlier this summer. His $84.1 million deal narrowly edges out Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander, who signed an $84 million contract.
