The Detroit Lions saw a key player suffer an injury at practice on Wednesday after right tackle Penei Sewell exited early.

According to Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com, Sewell departed the session early after coming down with a foot injury. The exact issue and its severity remains unknown at the moment.

Per Justin Rogers of Detroit Football Network, Sewell was able to leave the field under his own power, albeit slowly. Still, that's a better sign than had he been taken off in the cart.

"Penei Sewell left practice today with a left foot injury," Rogers wrote. "Trainers took off his shoe and were checking his ankle and foot before he walked — slowly but without assistance — to the locker room for further testing.

It goes without saying how crucial Sewell is to the Lions. Since being drafted with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Sewell has become one of the best offensive linemen in the league, earning back-to-back Pro Bowl nods and one first-team All-Pro in the past two seasons.

If Sewell is forced to miss time, the Lions would likely turn to veteran swing tackle Dan Skipper, but let's hope it doesn't come to that. The Lions regular-season opener is a little over two weeks away on Sunday, Sept. 8.
