Joel Matip, the former Liverpool defender, could be making a surprise return to the Premier League with West Ham United.

After leaving Anfield at the end of the 2023/24 season, the 33-year-old Cameroonian is now in talks with the Hammers about a potential free transfer, according to reports from talkSPORT.

West Ham have been busy in the transfer market, bringing in Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo to bolster their defence.

However, the departure of key defenders like Thilo Kehrer, Angelo Ogbonna, Kurt Zouma, and Nayef Aguerd has left gaps in their backline. New manager Julen Lopetegui is keen to strengthen his squad further, and Matip, currently a free agent, presents a valuable opportunity.

West Ham's defensive reinforcements

Matip, who joined Liverpool on a free transfer in 2016, was a crucial part of Jurgen Klopp's successful tenure at the club.

Over his eight years with the Reds, Matip made 201 appearances and contributed to winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and UEFA Super Cup.

With West Ham aiming to improve their Premier League standing under Lopetegui, the addition of an experienced defender like Matip could be a significant boost.

Although the Hammers have had a mixed start to the season, with one win from three matches, they hope that strengthening their defence will help them push for a European spot next season.
