A home Copa America begins in Texas for Gregg Berhalter's USMNT, where they'll face Bolivia in their first Group C match. With tough tests against Panama and Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay to come, Christian Pulisic and Co. will be hoping they can get off to a winning start against the lowest-ranked side on paper.

Pulisic captains the side coming into this tournament just two years out from the FIFA World Cup on home soil, but the USMNT's form ahead of their opening match has been so-so at best. CONCACAF Nations League Finals victories over Jamaica and Mexico respectively showed that Berhalter's side can handle the big occasions, but their two recent friendlies suggested otherwise.

A 5-1 hammering by Colombia in Maryland could have left the US's tournament preparations in tatters, and although they fought back to draw 1-1 with Brazil in Orlando a few days later, questions still remain over whether Berhalter's side can really challenge the might of South America's best teams.

Bolivia, however, don't exactly enter Group C in sterling form themselves, having won just one of their last six matches — against European minnows Andorra. Their other five recent encounters have all been losses, including a 3-0 loss of their own against Colombia. Both sides are still keen to get off to a winning start though, and The Sporting News has all your where to watch details.

USA vs. Bolivia predicted lineups, starting 11, team news

Gregg Berhalter will likely run out a starting lineup very similar to the one that played against Brazil in the final Copa America tune-up friendly.

There were questions coming into the summer about how the U.S. would replace injured right-back Sergino Dest, but Joe Scally won the job with a pair of brilliant performances in the warm-up matches vs. Colombia and Brazil. It’s expected that Folarin Balogun will start up front despite his slow start to life with the U.S.

Josh Sargent made the USMNT Copa America roster despite foot concerns which kept him out of both pre-tournament friendlies, but it’s unclear if he has recovered in time to play a role in the opening game. Tyler Adams was only rated for a substitute role against Brazil and may not be ready to start just yet.

USA predicted XI: (4-3-3): Turner (GK) — Scally, Richards, Ream, A. Robinson — Reyna, Musah, McKennie — Weah, Balogun, Pulisic.

Injured: Josh Sargent (foot, doubt)
Suspended: None

Bolivia have seen a switch at goalkeeper in recent months as 31-year-old Guillermo Viscarra has won the regular starting job over 37-year-old veteran Carlos Lampe and has 55 international caps.

The back line is anchored by Bolivar veteran Jose Sagredo, while his twin brother and club teammate Jesus Sagredo has also seen recent national team time. While Bolivia have many veterans in the squad, the anchor of the next generation is playmaker Ramiro Vaca who has 34 caps at 24 years old, having scored international four goals so far.

Bolivia predicted (3-5-2): Viscarra (GK) — Je. Sagredo, Haquin, Jo. Sagredo — Saucedo, Villamil, Justiniano, Vaca, Fernandez — Menacho, Miranda.

Injured: None
Suspended: None

USA vs. Bolivia prediction

  • Score prediction: USA 2-0 Bolivia

While neither of these two teams come into the tournament in championship-winning form, it's hard to look past the star power the USMNT still have in their ranks despite the recent injury worries of Dest and Adams.

The US are playing more and more games against top-tier opposition — with tournaments like this helping to bridge the gap between North and South America — and their 1-1 draw with nine-times Copa America champions Brazil could be exactly the confidence booster needed for the Stars and Stripes.

These two sides' only previous competitive meeting came in the Copa America group stages — ending 1-0 to Bolivia back in 1995. Plenty of water has passed under the bridge since then, and given the disparity between the quality of the two squads, it's hard to see anything other than a relatively routine USMNT win.
