For the first time in an Olympics group stage, the U.S. Women's National Team will take on their rivals from Europe, Germany.

The powerhouse nations will meet up on Sunday, July 28 at the Stade de Marseille in one of the most anticipated matches of this whole Olympics. Both teams are coming off 3-0 wins in their opening matches, as the U.S. trounced 10-player Zambia while Germany overpowered Australia.

Germany and the U.S., along with Norway, are the only nations to have won both Olympic gold and the World Cup, with both putting talent and history on the line in this match.

Additionally, a win for either side would all but ensure finishing atop Group B and earning an easier draw into the knockout stage.

The U.S. was boosted by the play of Mallory Swanson, who scored a brace, and Trinity Rodman, who scored one goal and looked dangerous throughout.

USWNT vs. Germany lineups, team news

U.S. coach Emma Hayes faces additional fitness concerns as her team prepares to face Germany. There's open questions about whether Sophia Smith or Jaedyn Shaw will play, and Rose Lavelle was taken off at halftime. It was likely a tactical move, but it's something to keep an eye on. The U.S. doesn't really have a replacement for Lavelle as a midfield creator alongside Lindsey Horan, so they'll need to make sure Lavelle has enough in the tank to play on Sunday.

If Smith is indeed out, we may see Crystal Dunn playing in the front three, with Jenna Nighswonger deputizing at left-back.

USWNT starting XI (4-3-3, right to left): Naeher (GK) — Fox, Girma, Davidson, Nighswonger — Horan, Albert, Lavelle — Rodman, Swanson, Dunn.

Interim coach Horst Hrubesch is back in charge and Germany is back to basics, looking to win aerial duels and set pieces. Chelsea's Sjoeke Nüsken was taken off at halftime and could be replaced in midfield with Sydney Lohmann. Otherwise, after the opening performance, Hrubesch could easily go with the same starting lineup against the U.S.

Germany starting XI (4-4-2 right to left): Berger (GK) — Gwinn, Hendrich, Hegering, Linder — Brand, Minge, Lohman, Buhl — Popp, Schuller.
