United States news and analysis

The US advanced out of Group A with wins over New Zealand and Guinea. Those victories came after a 3-0 loss to France in the opening match.

Former DC United forward Kevin Paredes (pictured above) has been USA's biggest impact player. Paredes, who now competes for Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, scored twice in the 3-0 win over Guinea that put the Americans in the quarterfinals.

Along with Paxten Aaronson and Griffin Yow, Paredes gives the US a trio of potent playmakers on the front line. Captain Tanner Tessmann has been a steady presence in the midfield. Goalie Patrick Schulte recorded six saves against Guinea to post his first Olympic shutout.

The US has advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2000, when it recorded its best Olympic finish in fourth place. After the shutout loss to France, the Americans found tactical success to break down New Zealand and Guinea en route to winning both games by a combined score of 7-1.

Morocco provides a stiffer challenge on Friday.

Morocco news and analysis

Morocco upset Argentina in its Olympics opener, but fell to a 10-man Ukraine team in the second round. Morocco then sealed its spot in the quarterfinals with a 3-0 win over Iran.

The Moroccans have played in eight Olympics and earned a silver medal in the 1972 Munich Games. Currently, Morocco is led by Soufiane Rahimi, who tops all Olympic players with four goals during the tournament. He's found the back of the net in all three games for Morocco.

The Americans also have to account for Achraf Hakimi (Paris Saint-Germain), Morocco's best overall player. This is an experienced Morocco team that reached the semifinals of the most recent World Cup.

Morocco has a decided edge in crowd support with a large contingent of fans in Paris.

Morocco vs. USA prediction

Morocco isn't a big-name team in the mold of France or Brazil, but its opening victory over Argentina opened some eyes. The Moroccans have excelled in international competition in recent years.

We expect the US to keep this game close and potentially force extra time. In the final analysis, though, betting on Morocco to advance at -155 looks like the best bet.

These teams have played in some high-scoring games, so we're also backing OVER 2.5 goals in regulation at -110 odds (via DraftKings).
