College football rankings from 1 to 134 for Week 2: USC, Miami make Power 4 statements

College football is making the case for a Super League right in front of our faces.

Week 1 showed us that. There were just seven head-to-head matchups between Power 4 teams – and most felt like first-round and quarterfinal playoff games.

Ranked road teams took care of business. Notre Dame beat Texas A&M. Penn State beat West Virginia. Miami beat Florida. Those teams should be rewarded. USC-LSU and Georgia-Clemson had quarterfinal atmospheres in Las Vegas and Atlanta, respectively. Even the ugly games – North Carolina beat Minnesota and Vanderbilt upset Virginia Tech – were riveting in their own way and each was decided on the game's final play.

"I would love to see the best play the best," Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush told Sporting News on Aug. 28. "Power 5 vs. Power 5. We should see blockbuster games in Week 1, Week 2, Week 3 and all the way through. That is where the best competition is. That is why I like to see this conference realignment. We'll see where these teams truly are.

"That is the way that we have always – as players we have always wanted it and thought it should look like," he said.

Those games impacted our 1-134 Rankings heading into Week 2 more than anything else. It is making the case that the Power 4 should play not less – but more – non-conference games against other Power 4 opponents.

Look at the rest of the Top 25. Six schools in our latest top 25 played Group of 5 schools in Week 1. The average margin of victory was 44.1 points per game. Ohio State, Texas and Alabama combined to outscore their opponents 167-6. We don't need to watch more than one of those games every year.

That was a larger margin than the 10 ranked teams that played FCS teams in Week 1. Those teams were 10-0 with a margin of victory of 41.3 points per game.

Six SEC teams punched down two levels below their weight class into the FCS level. Average margin of victory for the six SEC teams -- 64.6. Those games should not be scheduled.

Don't you want more Power 4 vs. Power 4? We get that in Week 2. There are a handful of conference games this week, but the meat of the schedule is the 11 non-conference games between Power 4 teams. If you could only watch these 11 games, would you be OK this week?

College football rankings 2024

Top 25 for Week 2

1. Georgia (1-0)

Georgia still looks the part as the premier program in the FBS. Carson Beck (23 of 33, 278 yards, 2 TDs) was in complete control in a 34-3 victory against Clemson. Beck was 15 of 19 in the first half and did not make a mistake despite a 6-0 halftime lead. Freshman Nate Frazier had 107 total yards (83 rush, 24 receiving) in place of suspended running back Trevor Etienne, and the defense was flat-out nasty as usual. Defensive end Mykel Williams suffered a left leg injury, which was the only sour note on another dominant Week 1 victory under Kirby Smart.

2. Ohio State (1-0)

The Buckeyes – who had a huge offseason in the portal – took a half to get rolling against Akron in a 52-6 victory. Kansas State transfer quarterback Will Howard (17 of 28, 228 yards, 3 TDs) found a favorite target in freshman Jeremiah Smith (6-92, 2 TDs), and Ohio State running backs TreVeyon Henderson (8-65) and Quinshon Judkins (13-55, TD) combined for 120 yards with new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. The defense scored two TDs in the second half, too. Ohio State faces Western Michigan in Week 2.

3. Texas (1-0)

Texas hammered Colorado State 52-0 to set up the Week 2 showdown with Michigan. Quinn Ewers (20 of 27, 260 yards, 3 TDs, INT) was efficient while the running game worked itself out against the Rams, and the defense limited Colorado State to 11 first downs. Arch Manning (5 of 6, 95 yards) added a passing TD and a rushing TD. The Longhorns beat Alabama in their marquee September non-conference last season. Will they pull off a similar feat at the Big House?

4. Alabama (1-0)

Alabama will stay in the national championship hunt with Kalen DeBoer, and the three-way race among Georgia, Texas and Alabama could be more entertaining than the playoff itself. Jalen Milroe had 200 passing yards, 79 rushing yards and five total TDs in a 63-0 victory against Western Kentucky. Sophomore running back Justice Haynes (4-102, TD) and freshman receiver Ryan Williams (2-139, 2 TDs) appear ready for starting roles. The new-look defense under coordinator Kane Wommack allowed 145 total yards and Michigan transfer Keon Sabb had two interceptions. Are you surprised?

5. Notre Dame (1-0)

Riley Leonard passed for 158 yards and rushed for 63 more in his Notre Dame debut, and he led the go-ahead drive in crunch time against Texas A&M for a 23-13 victory. The Irish did not allow a sack, and arguably the nation's best pass defense had two interceptions and limited Conner Wiegman to 100 passing yards. Marcus Freeman harps on passing efficiency defense, and the Irish have the second-best mark in the FBS at 54.7. Notre Dame also has a soft schedule the next three weeks, and that starts with the home opener against Northern Illinois. It could be in this No. 5 spot for a while.

6. Oregon (1-0)

The Ducks had a bizarre opener against Idaho in a 24-14 victory. Dillon Gabriel (41 of 49, 380 yards, 2 TDs) was efficient, but the running game never dominated at 2.9 yards per carry. Oregon coach Dan Lanning still showed a willingness to go on fourth down, and the Ducks were 1 of 3. One of those misses resulted in an Idaho touchdown. Will we get a sharper version in what figures to be a shootout against Boise State in Week 2? Will the Ducks slow down Ashton Jeanty, who had 267 rushing yards and six TDs in Week 1?

7. Ole Miss (1-0)

The Rebels should not play Furman again. Ole Miss won 76-0, and that came with 772 yards of total offense. Jaxson Dart (22 of 27, 418 yards, 5 TDs) put up huge numbers, and Tre Harris (8-179, 2 TDs) showed why he could be the best vertical threat in college football this season. Ole Miss allowed just 26 rushing yards. Lane Kiffin has an offensive machine that will be in the hunt in the SEC top tier. The Rebels face Middle Tennessee in Week 2.

8. Michigan (1-0)

Michigan needed 17 fourth-quarter points to put away Fresno State in a 30-10 victory, and there are clear offensive issues with an undecided quarterback split between Davis Warren (15 of 25, 118 yards, TD, INT) and Alex Orji (32 rushing yards). The offense was ordinary – which won't be good enough against Texas in Week 2. The good news for Sherrone Moore? The defense is dominant – especially against the run. The Bulldogs had nine rushing yards on 22 attempts. The secondary will be tested by the Longhorns.

9. Penn State (1-0)

The Nittany Lions left no joy in Morgantown with a 34-12 blowout victory against West Virginia. Drew Allar (11 of 17, 216 yards, 3 TDs) had a 98.3 QBR in Week 1; the highest ranking of any Big Ten quarterback. He averaged 19.6 yards per completion and found a legit go-to receiver in Harrison Wallace Jr. (5-117, 2 TDs). If Allar continues on that path, then the Nittany Lions will do more than just reach the CFP. Running back Nick Singleton (13-114, TD) is on track, too. Penn State plays Bowling Green in Week 2.

10. USC (1-0)

The Trojans might be higher after a 27-20 victory against LSU that silenced a few Lincoln Riley critics, especially the ones in the SEC. Miller Moss passed for 378 yards and a TD, and USC flashed an impressive group of play-makers at receiver. The defense allowed 420 yards but was efficient when it needed to be under new coordinator D'Anton Lynn. USC faces Utah State before a bye week and the Big Ten opener at Michigan.

11. Utah (1-0)

Welcome back Cam Rising. The seventh-year quarterback passed for 254 yards and five TDs in a 49-0 victory against Southern Utah in his first action since the 2023 Rose Bowl against Penn State. Rising hit 6 of 8 passes from 10 yards or more, which resulted in 218 yards and four TDs. He had the best passer rating among Power 4 quarterbacks at 318.9. These are great trends for Utah heading into its Big 12 debut against Baylor in Week 2.

12. Tennessee (1-0)

The Vols rolled up 717 yards of offense in a 69-3 victory against Chattanooga. Nico Iamaleava (22 of 28, 314 yards, 3 TDs) looked the part by setting the school's first-half passing yards record. He will put up real numbers in Josh Heupel's offense. Dylan Sampson rushed for 124 yards and three TDs. Ten different Tennessee players caught a pass of 10 yards or more, and the defense looks ready for a neutral-site matchup in Week 2 against NC State.

13. Miami, Fla. (1-0)

Washington State transfer quarterback Cam Ward (26 of 35, 385 yards, 3 TDs, INT) entered the Heisman Trophy chat. The Hurricanes turned a coin-flip game against rival Florida into a rout with 529 yards of total offense at The Swamp in a 41-17 victory. The defense allowed just 261 yards. Mario Cristobal scored a perception-altering win in the process against the SEC, and the Hurricanes are the highest-ranked ACC team after Week 2. Miami faces Florida A&M in Week 2.

14. Missouri (1-0)

The Tigers allowed just 86 total yards in a 51-0 victory against Murray State – part of a soft non-conference schedule for Missouri that continues in Week 2 against Buffalo. Sporting News Preseason All-American receiver Luther Burden III caught a TD pass in limited action, and quarterback Brady Cook (19 of 30, 218 yards, TD) was sharp. Missouri stays home the next three games against Buffalo, Boston College and Vanderbilt. Which one of those three teams is the toughest test?

15. Kansas State (1-0)

Kansas State rushed for 283 yards on 9.1 yards per carry in a 41-6 victory against UT-Martin. Quarterback Avery Johnson (14 of 21, 153 yards, 2 TDs, INT) did not have to do much, and the defense limited the Skyhawks to 38 rushing yards on 36 attempts. Kansas State faces Tulane in Week 2, and that has some juice given the Green Wave beat the Wildcats 17-10 in 2022.

16. Oklahoma (1-0)

The Sooners were a complete team in a 51-3 victory against Temple in Week 1. Jackson Arnold (17 of 25, 141 yards, 4 TDs) was efficient behind a running game that totaled 220 yards. He even added a 39-yard punt on a quick kick. The defense forced six turnovers in their first game as a school here. Brent Venables has a contender here, and that just adds more depth to the conference playoff race. The Sooners face Houston in Week 2.

17. Oklahoma State (1-0)

Oklahoma State ignored the upset cookbook against FCS powerhouse South Dakota State. The Cowboys won 44-20, did not commit a turnover and limited the Jackrabbits to 3 of 13 on third down. Mike Gundy might have some defense this year, and that pairs well with an experienced quarterback in Alan Bowman (25 of 34, 267 yards, 3 TDs) and Doak Walker Award winner Ollie Gordon II (27-104, 2 TDs). Arkansas is a fun opponent in Week 2. The teams have not met since 1980.

18. Iowa (1-0)

Iowa beat Illinois State 40-0 in the opener; an offensive explosion for a team that has been ridiculed in past seasons on that side of the ball. Kirk Ferentz missed because of a one-game suspension. Cade McNamara hit 21 of 31 passes for 251 yards and three TDs. That might not seem like much and it was against an opponent that tied for seventh in the Missouri Valley Conference last season, but Hawkeyes QBs had nine TD passes in all of 2023. New offensive coordinator Tim Lester was a hit in his first game, and the defense allowed 189 yards and forced three turnovers. Aaron Graves had three sacks. Ferentz returns for the Week 2 rivalry with Iowa State. The Cyclones have beat a ranked Iowa team one time – a 23-3 victory in 2005.

19. Arizona (1-0)

The nation's best receiver? It's Tetairoa McMillan right now. He had 15 targets, 10 catches, 304 yards and four TDs in a 61-39 victory against New Mexico in the Big 12 debut for the Wildcats. He caught eight or nine targets on passes of less than 20 yards. Quarterback Noah Fifita finished with 422 passing yards. Arizona did allow 471 total yards to the Lobos, and that will be an emphasis against Northern Arizona in Week 2. The Sept. 14 conference opener against Kansas State will be fun.

20. Kansas (1-0)

Kansas made short work of Lindenwood on Thursday in a 48-3 blowout that marked a successful return for quarterback Jalon Daniels. He finished with 148 passing yards, and the Jayhawks rolled up 331 rushing yards behind the tandem of Devin Neal (8-112, 2 TDs) and Daniel Hishaw (9-66, TD). Kansas ranks sixth in rushing offense as a result, and that will be the key in what will be a more difficult road test against an improved Illinois team in Week 2.

21. LSU (0-1)

Brian Kelly is now 0-3 in openers at LSU – and his frustration showed after a 27-20 loss to USC. Garrett Nussmeier (29 of 38, 304 yards, 2 TDs, INT) played well, and the defense has improved. The Tigers still had 10 penalties for 99 yards and were outscored 14-3 in the fourth quarter by the Trojans. This loss might haunt the Tigers later, but that is the price of a blockbuster neutral-site opener.

22. Georgia Tech (2-0)

Who had the Yellow Jackets as the second-highest ranked team in the ACC after Week 1? Haynes King (24 of 29, 275 yards, 2 TDs, INT) led a 35-12 victory against Georgia State. The Yellow Jackets rank second in the ACC with 207.5 rushing yards per game, and they have played two FBS opponents. The quick turnaround from the Dublin opener wasn't a factor against the Panthers, and a road trip to Syracuse in Week 2 is tricky. The Yellow Jackets lost 37-20 in their only previous visit in 2020.

23. Clemson (0-1)

Clemson is now 1-4 against top-10 teams under Dabo Swinney since 2021, but give them credit for scheduling the top team in the FBS. Clemson was limited to 188 total yards, and the same inconsistency on offense exists with quarterback Cade Klubnik. The defense held up for at least a half against Georgia. Appalachian State – a school with a known reputation for the upset – should have the Tigers' full attention in Week 2.

24. NC State (1-0)

The Wolfpack were slow starters against Western Carolina before pulling away in the second half of a 38-21 victory. Coastal Carolina transfer Grayson McCall (26 of 40, 318 yards, 3 TDs, INT) settled in, and Jordan Waters (20-123, 2 TDs) kept the ground game going. Forget about that first half. NC State can validate this ranking against Tennessee in Week 2.

25. Nebraska (1-0)

Shameless promotion for the Week 2 matchup against Colorado and Deion Sanders? Maybe, but freshman Dylan Raiola (19 of 27, 238 yards, 2 TDs) looked ahead of schedule in a 40-7 victory against UTEP. The Huskers rushed for 223 yards, and perhaps most importantly, there were no turnovers. Second-year coach Matt Rhule will love that. Colorado embarrassed Nebraska 36-14 last season. Memorial Stadium will be one of the best sites in Week 2
