The Manny Diaz era officially begins on Friday night, with Duke opening the 2024 season at home against Elon.
The Blue Devils have emerged as a respectable ACC program, compiling a 17-9 record — with a pair of bowl victories — across the past two seasons. But they've paid a price: Former head coach Mike Elko left for Texas A&M, and an exodus followed, with quarterback Riley Leonard (Notre Dame) and running back Jordan Waters (NC State) among the departures.

But Diaz brings with him a noted defensive acumen, and he dipped into the transfer portal for a quarterback, netting former Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy. In seven career games, the 6-5 redshirt sophomore has thrown for 477 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.
Elon, an FCS program, finished 6-5 last season. This marks the third consecutive year that the Phoenix start their season against a Power Four opponent, with previous losses to Wake Forest (2023) and Vanderbilt (2022).
