If Arizona State is going to finish anywhere above where it’s projected in 2024 — toward the bottom of the Big 12 Conference — it will need its offense to find a leader at quarterback.

The Sun Devils will give the first opportunity to take over that role to Michigan State transfer Sam Leavitt, who beat out fellow transfer Jeff Sims for the starting spot

Arizona State is in its first year in the Big 12 as one of four teams joining the league from the Pac-12 Conference along with Arizona, Colorado and Utah. The Sun Devils went 3-9 in 2023 in the first season under head coach Kenny Dillingham — the same record they had in 2022 under former head coach Herm Edwards.

Leavitt played in four games at Michigan State in 2023, going 15-of-23 passing for 139 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

Arizona State opens the season on Aug. 31 at home against Wyoming.
