Saints primed for problematic regression, per expert's NFL win-total projections

The last thing Dennis Allen and the New Orleans Saints need in 2024 is a regression.

That Allen era in New Orleans started at 7-10 in 2022 and moved to 9-8 last year. With the organization’s refusal to outright spend time rebuilding, anything less than an improvement on the record will cast serious questions about Allen, Derek Carr and more.

Yet, one expert sees a regression on the way.

NFL.com’s Cynthia Frelund just ran her annual simulations and tabs the Saints with just 7.4 average wins and wrote about a core member of the defense:

“I used to be able to write about Demario Davis being underrated, but fresh off his second straight Pro Bowl bid, the veteran linebacker is finally getting the respect he deserves. According to Next Gen Stats, when offenses targeted Davis last season, they lost 18.4 EPA -- the best number among all LBs.”

If there is good news about the analysis, it’s that the findings paint the Saints with a ceiling of 9.2 wins and a floor of 6.7.

But those numbers pinning the Saints outside the top 10 in the NFC around the likes of the Arizona Cardinals would cause problems nonetheless.

Such a showing would also merely create more buzz around Spencer Rattler, the rookie quarterback who had the hot summer and has the attention of fans. If the team starts slow en route to a season like the one projected above, fans will be calling for changes well before the front office.
