Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin will meet for a third time on September 17 inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas to settle their contentious rivalry once and for all.

With their first meeting in 2017 ending in a controversial split draw and their rematch in 2018 finding Canelo win a decision by the narrowest of margins, their feud reached a fevered pitch when the two sides couldn’t come to terms for a third bout. They ended up going their separate ways, with Canelo making history by becoming the undisputed super-middleweight champion in less than a year, while Golovkin battled injuries but went 4-0 with three knockouts.

But following Canelo’s loss to Dmitry Bivol in the light-heavyweight division back in May, the Mexican superstar will go back down to 168 pounds to defend his titles against Golovkin in one of the most anticipated fights of the year.

Expert Prediction for Canelo vs. GGG 3

When Manny Pacquiao met Juan Manuel Marquez for the fourth time, Pacquiao entered as a considerable favorite, despite their previous three fights being nip and tuck affairs. Pacquiao went on a historic rampage through weight classes between the second and third fights. And then he lost a controversial decision to Timothy Bradley before he faced Marquez.

And then Marquez knocked him out.

Does any of this sound familiar? It should. After narrowly defeating GGG, Canelo rampaged through weight classes, made some history, and lost a decision before he heads into the highly anticipated trilogy with Golovkin. He’ll be the favorite because of what he did outside of the GGG fights, and those close fights are now a distant memory.

Not saying that history will repeat itself, but Golovkin being a +380 underdog is too good not to take a swing at. For the past four years, all Golovkin has thought about is Canelo. Yes, he is both 40 years of age and moving up in weight, but a few factors are on his side heading into this fight.

For one, GGG is a very busy fighter who is both an exceptional boxer and a power puncher, while Canelo has seen his punch output take a dip over the years. There may be instances where Canelo’s lacking work rate hands rounds over to Golovkin. Canelo cemented his place as the pound-for-pound king by picking his spots against the likes of Caleb Plant, Callum Smith, Sergey Kovalev, and Billy Joe Saunders. His expectation is to pound them into submission eventually.

But what if they don’t submit?

Canelo found that out the hard way against Bivol, who refused to go away and outworked Canelo. Golovkin is in a similar spot, considering that he’s never been stopped and knows exactly what to expect from Canelo.

Expect this to be another close fight that will require Canelo to pick up the activity and hope that he can keep GGG from outworking him. If he’s unable to hurt Golovkin or make him respect his power, the upset will be in play.

The betting line is too good to not take GGG to pull off the upset against his rival.
