Manchester City and Arsenal face off in the 2023 FA Community Shield as they both look to kick their season off with some silverware.

Only Manchester United have won the competition more times than Arsenal, while Man City have only been able to lift the trophy six times. Pep Guardiola's side have lost in the final in each of the past two seasons.

Mikel Arteta has not won a competition with the Gunners since their 2020 Community Shield triumph over Liverpool, but there is a lot more pressure on the north London side to win more trophies now after they finished second in the Premier League in 2022/23.

The two sides met in the 2014 FA Community Shield, with Arsenal going on to win the match 3-0. Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey got on the scoresheet before Olivier Giroud scored a stunning goal in the second half.

Here are some of the regulations to be aware of for Sunday's match at Wembley Stadium, including what happens if the scores are level after 90 minutes.

Does the Community Shield go to extra time and penalties?

It's not unusual for these games to go the distance — indeed, three of the past six Community Shield matches have ended level after 90 minutes.

As the fixture is so close to the start of the Premier League season, extra time is not played in the event of the scores being level after the end of regulation time. With the trophy not considered one of significant importance, and as the regular season gets underway in the subsequent week, it's considered prudent not to put players at an increased risk of injury by playing an extra 30 minutes.

Instead, if the match is level after regular time, the fixture will go straight to penalties at Wembley Stadium. Each of Arsenal's previous two victories in the Community Shield have come via a penalty shootout.

Man City also needed penalties to beat Liverpool when they last won the competition in 2019.
