One of the most enchanting traditions of the Masters Tournament is the annual Par 3 Contest, which will take place Wednesday starting at noon ET.

The golfer who has the most favorable score against par after nine holes is declared the winner. However, no winner of the Par 3 Contest has ever gone on to triumph in the Masters in the same year.

It's a laid-back event compared to the main tournament, and many contestants don't even keep score. They often allow their loyal caddies to attempt a pitch or putt on the lavish greens.

The inaugural exhibition was held in 1960 and won by Sam Snead. The holes, ranging from 90 to 155 yards, play over DeSoto Springs Pond and Ike's Pond. There have been 107 holes-in-one made over the years, including a record nine in 2016.

Masters Par 3 Contest prize money

While there is big money to win The Masters, none will come from the friendly Par 3 competition.

The winner of the Masters Par 3 event is awarded a crystal pedestal bowl trophy, but no prize money for the event.

There's no green jacket, either, for this winner, just bragging rights and the fun of playing with family and friends.

Masters Par 3 Contest winners

While the contestants competing at The Masters are the highlight of the event, there is plenty of star power at the Par 3 Contest, as well.

Pádraig Harrington is the only three-time winner of the event. He went back-to-back in 2003 and 2004, sharing the 2003 win with David Toms before winning the 2012 edition with Jonathan Byrd.

There are six other multi-time winners of the event: Sam Snead, Tom Watson, Sandy Lyle, David Toms, Isao Aoki and Jay Haas.
