Should Commanders sign former first-round pick or underrated free agent at area of need?

The Washington Commanders already got what has been called a massive steal in free agency right after the final cuts and waiver wire process.

Might the new Dan Quinn-led regime have it in them again?

While much of the focus now turns to how the Commanders will prep for the Week 1 road encounter with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox wonders if the team might go after free agents like cornerbacks Caleb Farley and Ahkello Witherspoon:

“There aren't too many teams that couldn't use additional CB depth, but the Washington Commanders could desperately use an influx of corner talent. They ranked dead-last in passing yards allowed last season, and 2023 first-round pick Emmanuel Forbes Jr. is battling just to avoid the bust label.”

The critique of Washington’s cornerback depth chart is certainly fair, with Forbes even seeming like a possible shocker of a cut candidate over the summer. Depth is thin and it’s obvious the pass-rush will have to work hard to compensate into the season.

Some of the names mentioned are also interesting. Witherspoon might be 29 years old, but he started 17 games last year with three interceptions and continues to be reliable.

Farley, though, might be more Washington’s style as the massive roster turnover continues. The 22nd pick in the 2021 draft just washed out with the Tennessee Titans after appearing in just nine games from 2021-2022, yet some of those traits that made him a first-round pick despite red-flagged injury concerns remain.

Barring an unexpected upswing for Commanders corners, the team will continue to feature prominently in the conversation when it comes to free-agent corners in the coming months.
