It was an emotional day at Anfield on May 19 when the 2023/24 Premier League season came to a close, and with it, the tenure of Liverpool's most successful manager of the past 30 years.

Jurgen Klopp oversaw his last match as Reds boss on Sunday at home to Wolves. The German decided to walk away from Merseyside after eight and a half years in England's top division, having become drained by his remarkable but gruelling job.

Klopp will forever be remembered as one of Liverpool's finest managers, not only for ending a three-decade wait for a league title but for restoring and fostering a connection between the club's passionate fan base and a team that had long been considered nearly men of the Premier League era. There is no doubt that he will be a lasting legacy.

But how many trophies did he win during his time in England? What's his success rate throughout his coaching career? And how does he compare to Liverpool's greatest? The Sporting News takes a look.

Eight of those trophies have come during his time with Liverpool, which began in October 2015.

Most successful Liverpool managers: How does Klopp compare?

Klopp is the most successful Liverpool manager of the Premier League era, i.e. since 1992. However, he does not quite match up to the most renowned in the history of the club.

Of Liverpool's 21 full-time men's team managers, the most successful was Bob Paisley, who won 20 trophies in just nine years from August 1974 to July 1983, including six league titles and three European Cups. Paisley's tenure was the cornerstone of Liverpool's dominance of English football for much of the 70s and 80s, as well as their impressive record on the continent, building on the foundational work of predecessor Bill Shankly, arguably the most important figure at Anfield in the past century.

The longest-serving Liverpool manager is Tom Watson, who held the position for 18 years and nine months from 1898 to 1915. It feels unlikely that club record will ever be surpassed.
