Last time England suffered heartache in a European Championship final, Dominic Calvert-Lewin was among the substitutes who looked on as Italy won on penalties at Wembley in 2021.

On Sunday in Berlin, as captain Harry Kane was a hauled off after a laboured performance, Ollie Watkins was sent on to try and change the picture. After Mikel Oyarzabel scored what proved to be Spain’s 86th-minute winner, Brentford’s Ivan Toney was the last throw of the dice.

Injuries have played part in Calvert-Lewin's fall down the pecking order, with repeated struggles against relegation with Everton also proving to be far from ideal.

The 27-year-old target man joined the Toffees from boyhood club Sheffield United back in 2016 but is now the subject of interest from West Ham, according to a report from Football Insider.

The Hammers purportedly join Newcastle United as a potential suitor for Calvert-Lewin, although their interest is seemingly contingent on moving fellow England international Callum Wilson on from St. James’ Park.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin career record, appearances, goals

Calvert-Lewin has made 247 appearances in all competitions for Everton, scoring 68 goals. This includes 54 in 213 Premier League outings.

His most prolific campaign came under Carlo Ancelotti in 2020/21, when he hit 16 in 33 matches, securing his selection for that summer's delayed Euro 2020.

Injuries have taken a toll since and, when Calvert-Lewin returned to play a fuller part in Everton’s 2023/24 campaign, he suffered a sapping drought of 18 top-flight games without a goal, spanning 18 matches.

A late-season recovery of four goals in seven reminded fans of Calvert-Lewin’s enduring qualities, with his towering header to seal a 2-0 Merseyside derby win over Liverpool at Goodison — one that will live long in the memory.

Calvert-Lewin has scored four times for England but the last of his 11 caps came as a substitute in the 4-0 Euro 2020 quarterfinal win over Ukraine.
