Southampton's transfer activity has been relatively lowkey so far, but the impending arrival of Ben Brereton Diaz at a bargain price suggests the club is gearing up to make a significant move. It appears they are prepared to break their transfer record to secure Russell Martin's top target.

The Saints have made some solid acquisitions, striking a balance between seasoned veterans on short-term contracts and promising young talents. They have also brought back two players, Flynn Downes and Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who were on loan last season, which makes their signings feel less like newcomers.

To date, the Saints have spent over £50 million ($65m), while only bringing in £9 million ($11.5m) from player sales, including Duje Caleta-Car and Lyanco.

Now, according to GIVEMESPORT, Southampton's spending spree isn't finished yet, as they aim to shatter their transfer record to bring in Matt O'Riley, who is Russell Martin's top target.

So who exactly is O'Riley, and what's the potential transfer appeal to Southampton?

Why Southampton should sign O'Riley? Style of play, stats and competition

Matt O'Riley is a gifted midfielder known for his keen eye for goal and exceptional playmaking skills. A product of Fulham's academy, the London-born talent struggled to break into the first team at the Cottagers, which led him to join MK Dons in League One.

His standout performances in that league quickly set him apart from his peers, catching the attention of Celtic, who signed him for a modest £1.5 million ($2m) after activating his release clause.

Making 121 appearances for the Bhoys, O'Riley has 61 goal contributions and six trophies to his name. He hit 18 goals in the Scottish top flight last season, contributing 13 assists for excellent measure.

The 23-year-old has attracted the attention of a raft of Premier League and European clubs this summer, with his potency from midfield marking him as one with high-level qualities.

Atalanta of Serie A have moved first for the Celtic man and recently saw a third bid of £15 million ($20m) plus add-ons turned down.

The Saints are also believed to have tabled an opening bid, with Celtic demanding a record sale worth £25 million ($32m) for their star man. As things stand, it looks like a two-way race between Saints and the reigning Europa League winners.
