Historic European heavyweights Spain and France will face off in Munich on Tuesday in an epic semifinal matchup to settle who advances to the final of Euro 2024.
La Roja upset hosts Germany 2-1 in extra time to earn a spot in the final four in dramatic fashion. Luis de la Fuente's side led for much of the second half through substitute Dani Olmo's opener, with Mikel Merino's last-gasp 119th-minute header then preventing a penalty shootout after Florian Wirtz had levelled dramatically in the dying embers of normal time.
That drama was matched by rivals France, who sealed a 5-3 penalty shootout win over Portugal after a goalless two hours of football in Hamburg, to set up a showdown on July 9 in Munich. For the fourth time in the past five major tournaments, Les Bleus are in the last four.
Les Bleus have yet to score from open play so far into the tournament and it's just remarkable that any team could get to the last four of such a competition despite struggling so much in front of goal. Even more astonishing considering that team is packed with world-class attackers, and is captained by arguably the best forward in the world in Kylian Mbappe.
