The LA Galaxy continue their chase of Supporters' Shield leaders Inter Miami as they travel to meet St. Louis City in a Sunday MLS matinee.

Sitting atop the Western Conference with a five-point lead, the Galaxy trail Lionel Messi's side by four points in the overall league standings heading into the weekend. They've been electric this season up front, jolted by the offseason arrival of Joseph Paintsil and Gabriel Pec in the attack.

Things, meanwhile, could not be more dire for St. Louis City, who sit way down on the opposite end of the table. Last season's expansion darlings have suffered a severe sophomore slump, with injuries and on-field regression leaving them second-bottom in the Western Conference and a full 10 points adrift of the playoff positions.

Given the gap in form and results between these two sides, anything short of three points for the visitors would be a big disappointment and a blow in the race for the regular season crown.

St. Louis City vs. LA Galaxy lineups & team news

St. Louis City sport a long injury list as boss John Hackworth has struggled to see his best players available to deploy. The absence of striker Joao Klauss since late June due to a knee injury is the most notable. Still, they have not lacked for goal scoring in his stead, even as they are also without forwards Rasmus AlmCelio Pompeu, and Tomas Ostrak as well.

Instead, the most impactful injury has been to center-back Joakim Nilsson, as they have fallen apart at the back without him on the pitch. Since he went down with a hamstring injury in mid-June, they've conceded an astonishing 23 goals in nine games. He did return briefly to play one match in mid-July, but was back on the shelf shortly after.

St. Louis City projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Burki (GK) — Totland, Kessler, Hiebert, Reid — Durkin, Lowen — Thorisson, Teuchert, Hartel — Becher.

Regular left-back Julian Aude has been missing for the LA Galaxy since early July with a groin issue, having been third in the league in minutes played at the time of his injury. That leaves 26-year-old John Nelson to slot in, having started seven of the eight games since Aude went down, picking up three yellow cards in the process.

That's the only fitness concern for any regular Galaxy player, as Greg Vanney has an otherwise fully available squad at his disposal.

LA Galaxy projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): McCarthy (GK) — Yamane, Neal, Yoshida, Nelson — Delgado, Cerrillo — Pec, Puig, Fagundez — Paintsil.

St. Louis City vs. LA Galaxy prediction, betting odds & lines

  • Score prediction: St. Louis City 1-3 LA Galaxy

St. Louis City have just one single win league since mid-May, and they've been a defensive sieve in that span. In that time spanning 15 MLS matches, they have coughed up four goals to an opponent on more occasions (3) than they've kept clean sheets (2), totaling 35 goals conceded, or 2.3 per game.

The Galaxy, meanwhile, have won 11 of their last 13 games, scoring 27 goals in that time. This will be mostly one-way traffic.
