The USA have a strong claim to having the best men's soccer national team in North America, but Canada will challenge that standing in the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League final on Sunday in Las Vegas.

The American side are reigning Nations League and Gold Cup champions (both won in 2021), and they were the only team from the region to advance to the knockout rounds at the 2022 World Cup. A 3-0 thumping of Mexico in Thursday's semifinal only served to bolster their position as heavyweights of the region.

However, after surprisingly topping the North American World Cup qualifying standings and claiming a win and draw over the Americans in their last two head-to-head matches, Canada will feel they have what it takes to topple the USA off its perch.

Generational talents like Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David have fueled Canada's rise — they both scored in Thursday's semifinal vs. Panama — and after reaching its first World Cup in 37 years, the nation wants to end a 23-year trophy drought and show that its men's team is no longer a pushover.

Canada's all-time record against the Americans is relatively close (16 USA wins, 10 Canada wins, and 12 draws), especially when it comes to official competitions like the Nations League (9 USA wins, 8 Canada wins, and five draws). Sunday will be their first time meeting in a final.

And there might be no better time for Canada to make history with two key players missing for the USA. Midfielder Weston McKennie and right-back Sergino Dest are both suspended due to red cards each picked up against Mexico.
