Football is a popular sport among all people across the globe, even the Royal family.
From Queen Elizabeth II watching Brazil icon Pele at the Maracana to Prince William being President of the Football Association, the British monarchy have had an influence on the beautiful game.
The coronation of King Charles III is set to take place on Saturday, May 6. The Sporting News looks at the team he supports and the matches he has attended over the years.
Who does King Charles III support?
When speculating about which teams the Royal family support, London clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham are always thrown into the mix. However, this is usually an incorrect assumption.
In 2012, King Charles III stated that he supports Burnley. The Lancashire club were in the Championship at the time, often in the middle of the table rather than the top end.
Burnley secured promotion back to the Premier League this season under manager Vincent Kompany, finishing top of the Championship just a year after going down.
Why does King Charles III support Burnley?
The king also said at the same reception in 2012 the reason for supporting Burnley. It was due to the charity work and local support being done in the local area.
"A consortium of my charities, including the British Asian Trust, has been working in Burnley," he said. "Burnley has been through some very challenging times and I'm trying to find ways of helping to regenerate and raise aspirations and self-esteem in that part of the world."
After showing his support for the club and area, Burnley gave him a VIP season ticket.
King Charles at football matches
Due to a very busy schedule, the Royal family and King Charles III have not had a lot of time to regularly attend football matches.
King Charles III did make an appearance along with Princess Diana at the 1991 FA Cup between Nottingham Forest and Tottenham, which the latter won 2-1. They shook hands with all the players before the match and also handed the trophy over at the end.
Brian Laws was a player for Forest in that match but he was watched on by King Charles III 20 years later when he became the manager of Burnley. The king visited Turf Moor to help with his regeneration project.
More recently, the king and Queen Consort were seen at the Racecourse Ground to visit Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. They took a tour of the stadium before meeting men's, women's and youth teams.
